BMW Motorrad's first move for 2017 is updating the F-Model range to meet mandatory Euro 4 emission standards while also adding a few high-tech touches in the process.
The main change is the addition of the new ride-by-wire e-gas throttle control. This allows the possibility to select between various throttle-response modes: two on the F700GS, Road and Rain, and four on the F800GS and F800GS Adventure: Road and Rain in addition to Enduro and Enduro Pro modes. In Road mode, the engines deliver full power and torque while ABS and ASC (stability and traction control) are set for high grip tarmac conditions. In Rain mode the throttle response becomes much milder while ABS and ASC are set for low grip tarmac conditions. In Enduro mode, the throttle response is slightly milder and ABS and ASC are set for the lower grip conditions met in a moderate off-road riding on road tires. The Enduro Pro mode provides the power and throttle response of Road mode, while ABS and ASC are tuned for the grip that real off-road knobby tires generate on dirt and gravel surfaces. In Enduro Pro, ABS action at the rear brake is excluded in order to give the rider the ability to lock the rear wheel and make it slide around tight corners.
The Euro 4 upgrade did not cause the parallel twin to lose any power, so the 2017 F700GS still delivers 75 hp at 7,000 rpm and 56.8 lbs.-ft. of peak torque at 5,000 rpm. The F800GS remains at its original 85 hp at 7,500 rpm and 61.2 lb.-ft. at 5,750 rpm.
New instrument panels are part of the update and they now include a Euro-4 mandatory malfunction warning light plus the e-gas mode indicator. The exhaust system now sports stainless steel headers while a renewed Akrapovic high-performance exhaust system is available as an option.
