KTM delivered the largest-displacement bike in the bunch with its 505 SX. Actual size is 478cc and, yes, it is fast. Power delivery is very smooth and controllable, though.
The 505 definitely feels like a big bike and takes some getting used to. Its heavy feeling never goes away, either, and the suspension just doesn't suck up bumps as well as those of the other bikes. "The handling is not fluid," said Doughty. "And it was too twitchy, making it a handful."
Slower corner entry worked better on the 505, which was fine because you could count on that engine to get you out on the exit! Yes, by far, the most lasting impression came from the meaty motor.
"Torque! There's no replacement for displacement," exclaimed Eastman. "I found the 505 fun and manageable because engine power was broad and linear. I liked that you could basically run the bike a gear high everywhere and it still pulled like a freight train."
The big KTM also featured the magic button, and everybody knows electric starting is a Vet's best friend. The most experienced—and oldest—rider in the test was former National Motocross champ Gary Jones, 56, who wished more of the bikes featured e-starting.
So, a great engine, but almost everybody complained about the chassis, which hurt the biggest Thumper in voting.
