The biggest news from Suzuki at EICMA 2024 is replacements for the longstanding DR-Z400S and DR-Z400SM, two models that have been massively successful thanks to their simplicity and affordability. Now, 23 years after the inception of the DR-Z400S, Suzuki has decided to completely overhaul the DR-Z platform—but without straying too far from the original formula that made the model so approachable.
Suzuki’s all-new DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM feature a new 398cc DOHC four-valve liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine with dual ignition, a five-speed transmission, and a slipper clutch producing a claimed 38 hp at 8,000 rpm and 27.3 lb.-ft. of torque at 6,500 rpm.
The engine has higher lift camshafts with reduced overlap that actuate titanium valves. Now, the DR-Z is fuel-injected via a 42mm throttle body featuring a 10-hole injector. A new airbox and inlet tube are designed to improve intake flow and generate sharper throttle response. Additionally, the airbox side cover retains a quick-release tab that Suzuki explains as a door function. A new stainless steel exhaust is larger in diameter with a double-walled silencer to reduce heat transfer.
The clutch has been redesigned and includes a Suzuki Clutch Assist System (SCAS) which works as a slipper and assist clutch. This system allows a small amount of clutch slip under heavy deceleration (slipper) and increases plate pressure under acceleration (assist). Cable actuation remains on the DR-Z’s clutch. Perhaps the only miss on the long list of updates and changes is not upgrading the transmission to a six-speed.
Suzuki’s new DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM feature an adjustable electronics suite and a ride-by-wire system providing three ride modes. Rider aids include adjustable traction control and switchable ABS on both models. At the core of the new bike’s electronic suite is the Suzuki Intelligent Ride System (S.I.R.S.) which includes the Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (SDMS). These systems provide the rider with three different power modes that have tailored power output and power delivery. The Suzuki Traction Control System (STCS) offers four levels of traction control: 1, 2, G, off; G represents Gravel mode and is intended for unpaved surfaces.
Both bikes feature a Bosch ABS system, but the DR-Z4S gets an additional ABS level. The dual sport provides three levels of ABS: active on both wheels, active on the front wheel, and disabled on both wheels. The DR-Z4SM provides two levels of ABS: active on both wheels and active only on the front wheel. Both bikes also receive an LCD display where riders have access to information including their current ride mode, ABS setting, speed, and a fuel gauge.
The new bikes receive an all-new twin-spar steel frame and aluminum subframe as well as adjustable KYB suspension. The dual sport and supermoto share the same suspension components but are tailored for their respective disciplines. This new DR-Z platform features an 46mm inverted KYB cartridge fork with compression and rebound adjustment as well as a KYB shock with provisions for compression, rebound, and preload adjustment.
At the back you’ll find a new lightweight aluminum swingarm and progressive linkage system. Suzuki’s DR-Z4S offers 11 inches of suspension up front and 11.6 inches of suspension travel at the rear, while the DR-Z4SM provides slightly less travel with 10.2 inches up front and 10.9 inches at the rear.
Wheels, tires, and brakes are the biggest differences between the S and SM. The dual sport receives 21- and 18-inch wheel sizes with IRC GP-410 tires. Braking is handled by a 270mm disc with a dual-piston caliper up front and a 240mm disc with a single-piston caliper at the rear. Suzuki’s supermoto features 17-inch wheels front and back with Dunlop Sportmax Q5A tires and an oversized 310mm front disc and dual-piston caliper. The supermoto’s rear brake is identical to its dirt-slinging sibling.
Seat height has increased to 36.8 inches on the DR-Z4S and 35 inches on the DR-Z4SM. Additional changes include a revised rider triangle on both bikes with a new tapered aluminum handlebar, wider footpegs, and a new seat design. A claimed curb weight of 340 pounds is cited for the DR-Z4SM while the DR-Z4S is slightly lighter at a claimed 333 pounds.
A new bike demands a fresh look. For 2025, the Suzuki DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM receive all-new bodywork and graphics. The dual sport is available in three colors, Champion Yellow No. 2, Solid Special White No. 2, and Solid Iron Gray which includes blacked-out chassis parts. The supermoto is available in two color options, Solid Special White No. 2 and Sky Gray which also incorporates blacked-out chassis parts.
Pricing for both models is $8,999. Anticipated availability is April for the DR-Z4S and May for the DR-Z4SM.
