The “first all-electric off-road powersports company”? That’s what Volcon Inc. purports to be. The firm announced that it’s opening for business on October 20, and its first products will be two- and four-wheeled, electric, off-road adventure and utility vehicles. For the long term, the company says, it is looking at products that focus on “providing fun, family off-road adventures, backcountry exploration, and practical utility.” Given the current burgeoning sales trends for off-road powersports vehicles, and the increasingly crowded electric mobility space, it looks like the company’s timing might be spot-on.
Volcon’s initial entry in the electrified off-road arena is the Grunt, an easy-to-ride, all-terrain off-road two-wheeler with a bench seat and chunky tires. Grunt is said to be good for 50 hp and 75 pound-feet of torque, with a top speed of 60 mph. It’ll also come equipped with a hot-swappable battery pack capable of 100 miles of range, and have the ability to recharge from any household outlet in just two hours.
Grunt is “designed for exploring the outdoors, serving as a nimble utility vehicle, or providing family, off-road fun,” Volcon says. Pricing will start at $5,995, and the target date for delivery to customers is spring of 2021.
The company will follow up the Grunt with Stag (a two-seat model) and Beast (a four-seat model), both of which will debut in late 2021 into 2022. The two models will address the low-maintenance utility as well as the sport UTV segments, though it’s not clear which will do what. Volcon says more family-oriented models are also in the works, pointing to the fact that electric vehicles are easy to operate and reliable, and require almost no regular maintenance. According to Volcon, vehicles will be manufactured in the greater Austin area, with product development currently underway at a temporary facility in Texas.
Andrew Leisner has been appointed CEO of Volcon, and the 25-year powersports industry veteran is eager to get things started:
“Volcon was quickly funded with an oversubscribed seed round, confirming the enthusiasm for the category,” Leisner said. “Having grown up riding with my father and continuing that tradition on motorcycles and UTVs with my daughters, I am excited to help lead the evolution of the powersports industry with electric vehicles that enhance the outdoor experience while reducing our environmental footprint for future generations.”
